New York may have a serious testing screw-up on it hands. Math teachers across the state are reporting a failure rate of 70- 80% on the “Math A Regents Exam.” The normal pass rate is ~50% in the city.

The Regents used to be optional but now, apparently, functions as the state exit exam. Kids who failed will be permitted to march at graduation but won’t receive diplomas unless they can pass the test in August.

If the test truly doesn’t match the (most likely state-imposed) curriculum, that is a major screwup. Once again, the kids pay the price for adult incompetence.
