The University of Michigan’s new application process includes this assignment:

Students will have three writing requirements–two of 250 words each and one of 500 words–plus an optional fourth essay. One of the 250-word essays deals with diversity, with applicants choosing from the following two questions:

    1. At the University of Michigan, we are committed to building an academically superb and widely diverse educational community. What would you as an individual bring to our campus community?

    2. Describe an experience you’ve had where cultural diversity–or a lack thereof–has made a difference to you.

I don’t care if my kids get a full-ride scholarship to UM; they are NOT going there.

What the heck could you say?

    1. I’m smart and I work hard.

    2. I read a lot of different books.

I’m with you, Daryl. They aren’t even hiding the fact that they’ve got an agenda here, and education ain’t it.

    Test Act?

A piece of British history. The Test Act barred from public office or university admission anyone who did not subscribe to the majority religious opinion. I’m sure there were many who simply signed on the dotted line, going along to get along, but those who exercised their liberty of conscience paid for it. Article VI of our Constitution specifically forbids a “religious Test” as a condition of office.

The parallels with this diversity questionnaire should be manifest. Any student who does not adhere to the multicultural creed clearly has no place at UM.
