    To Whom It May Concern,

I am a doctoral student at the Boston University School of Education in the department of Special Education. I am doing a pilot study this summer as a precursor to my dissertation. The title of my pilot study as well as my dissertation is: “Parents’ Engagements in the Social Skills Training of their Homeschooled Children who have Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder-Inattentive Type and Comorbid Social Phobia”. I am looking for parents who homeschool their children who fit into this diagnostic criteria. I realize that I may have to travel in order to locate and research this specific population. Please advise me if you know any families who fit the parameters of my research and would be willing to participate. Brian Ray has informed me that I may suggest to anyone interested in my study to talk to him about it. Thank you very much.

    Sincerely,

    Esta M. Rapoport

I got a similiar request from a local doctor looking for Boys of certain ages to do a local study on ADHD & homeschooling. He was willing to pay $50 to $100.
I didn’t pass this on to my support group as the Mom’s/kid’s I know had already gone through so much in diagnostic stuff & battling schools that it didn’t seem right to turn them into lab rats!

Its a great idea – I would be especially interested to know how many kids are ADHD and being medicated that have been homeschooled since day 1, as opposed to the ADHD/medicated kids that were pulled out of the PS world by their parents as an alternative.

My daughter has Oppositional Defiant Disorder and ADHD according to the therapist she used to see but I don’t know what this Social Phobia business is. I really don’t think she has it though – she’s a real social butterfly.

I might participate if it will help convince people to not drug their kids just to make the schools happy or their own jobs easier.

I don’t drug my child and I never will. I do drug myself though because it really is hard to deal with a child like mine all day every day. (Prozac, nothing illegal)

I found some of John Rosemond’s ideas to be a good antidote for “oppositional defiant disorder” with one child a number of years ago.

I’ve never heard of John Rosemond. I’m off to google for him now. Thanks.

Rosemond has a syndicated column that runs in our local paper on Tuesdays. I notice that he became a lot more mellow and tolerant when his grandkids came along. He used to be fairly harsh.
