I actually agree with the first part of this letter- a pedestrian bridge would be appropriate. The part that caught my eye is the concluding sentence. It sure sounds like a case of blaming the victim.

Pedestrian warning on highway is stupid

The brain trust at DelDOT has again demonstrated its mental muscle with the placement of temporary signs stating “Caution: pedestrians crossing roadway” at various points along U.S. 13 between Hares Corner and the U.S. 40 split, in response to recent pedestrian traffic fatalities.

The deadly problem of pedestrians crossing the roadway is not new. It is impossible for drivers to see people crossing the highway in the dark. And is it even legal to cross an eight-lane highway anywhere one chooses?

Wouldn’t a pedestrian cross over, like the one on Route 13 in Wilmington Manor, or a fence or wall placed in the median to deter pedestrian traffic, be more effective? These signs serve no purpose other than to inflame drivers who spend inordinate time battling traffic while trying to traverse New Castle County.

You mean we have to slow down for all these pedestrians?

This reminds me of Fahrenheit 451.

It’s been way too long since I read that book. How so?

Well, there are several parts in the book that give allusion to the general lack of regard towards human life. The pedestrian issue is a big theme. Clarisse is killed crossing a street, and as Montag is making his ‘getaway’ he’s almost hit crossing a street and makes note that it was a car full of kids. They would have killed him and traveled on about their joy ride without a second thought on it. 🙂 Love the book, but then, my mother gave my middle name because of a character in it so I might be a little bit biased. 😉
