“Is your mom your teacher?” they ask my daughter when she says she is homeschooled. “No, I teach myself,” she says. It is a comment that confuses most people.

Holt didn’t coin the word “unschooling” to describe child-led learning — it was simply his word for “not going to school”. (Remember the un-cola?) It has taken on the more narrow meaning over time. Otherwise a pretty decent explanation of the method. |
