What was VHEA (Virginia Home Education Association) — apparently often confused with HEAV (Home Educators Association of Virginia) — is now The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers, or VA Homeschoolers for short (stick a dot-org on there and you have the new website name, too).

They really missed a chance with that nickname, though. Picture the fun at their next conference:

“Where’s the Virginia Homeschoolers member booth?”

    “OVa there, OVa there …”

Well, I hope they’re not now confused with “PA homeschoolers.” That’s the for-profit business that screws Pennsylvania homeschoolers at every opportunity.

I don’t get the name change at all. Every time I hear it I think Organization of American States. Then again, I never thought the alleged name conflict was that big of a deal anyway.

If anyone ought to change their name it is HEAV. Every time I see that written I get a mental image of a homeschooler hugging the toilet.

“OVa there, OVa there …” is very funny! Best humorous use of a supposed acronym I’ve seen yet. (But if there *were* an acronym, it’d be “TOVH,” which doesn’t roll off the tongue very easily. Unless, of coruse, you’re a Vulcan.)

It’s not too generous to believe that most people can tell the difference between Pa Homeschoolers and VaHomeschoolers. They are, after, all, widely known as two different states.

Resons for the name change are posted at
    vahome...e.html
    In a nutshell:
When two homeschool organizations operate in the same state, they need to have their own easily recognized individual identities. The similarity between “Virginia Home Education Association” (VHEA) and “Home Educators Association of Virginia” (HEAV) resulted in many people confusing the two state organizations. This has been a problem with gaining new members and in helping people understand who we are and how we are markedly different.

Although the general public was probably not much aware of it, the organization’s volunteers and board encountered the confusion problem regularly. The distinctly different new name will resolve that issue.

    Shay,
I was being a bit facetious about PA homeschoolers (TM). Congrats on the new name and website. Very classy. BTW, do you know anything about NC statewide inclusives? I can’t seem to track any down.
