THIS IS WHAT YOU GET …
… when you really believe in letting your children follow their own interests:
Meet C/Amn (Cadet Airman) Haas, Delaware Air National Guard Cadet Squadron, Civil Air Patrol.
It’s not that I’m unfamiliar with the military — my father was a Marine who served in Korea just after the war — but this is something I don’t think I could ever have foreseen.

And he needs a shave. No worries — we have a diagram. I apparently have to take about a half-inch off each side of that mustachlette before his encampment next week … I hope they have a good selection of vegetarian MRE’s We think he’ll be eating a lot of bread and apples … |

We think he’ll be eating a lot of bread and apples … There are ways (there are always ways). I’m a vegetarian and I know a few simple tricks that involve hot water and a good Thermos. (He can boil water, can’t he?) There are also some good rehydrate-and-serve things that take up little space and can be combined with other things to make passable meals. Those guys need lots-o-calories in boot camp. I’ll see what information I can put together. I’ve been meaning to do something not unlike this for some college students I chat with, anyway. |

Thanks, speedwell, but he won’t have any control over what he eats while he’s away — they eat in a mess hall. It’s like summer camp in camouflage, so they’ll provide plenty of food — he just has to pick and choose wisely. He’s 13, by the way, although you’d never know it from the photo! |

Congratulations, Cadet! We’re wishing you a wonderful and enriching experience serving in the CAP. And WTG, Mom & Dad, for being there every step of the way. Dy |

I hope your son enjoys his time as a Cadet Airman, and that the experience benefits him in the future. |

13? (falls out of chair) No, I would not have guessed, ever. We met a chat friend yesterday, and her long-haired college-age son, articulate and straightforward, turned out to be 15. Wow. |
