OH, BEVERLY–
The Amarillo Globe-News has an Op/Ed on home education (passwords here) that strikes me as wrong, but I’m having a hard time putting my finger on why. Perhaps it’s the assumption that home educating parents need to have a college degree. Or maybe it’s the subtle sneer about socialization. Or possibly it’s the outright theft (they don’t even provide a link) and mis-representation of Beverly Hernandez’ work for half the column-inches.
AGN allegedly quoting Beverly on “Intimidated by the Teaching”:
Intimidated by the teaching? There are curriculum and teacher materials available to help with planning and teaching; however, a parent with a limited education needs to look at the situation realistically.
What Beverly really wrote:
Intimidated by the teaching? – If you can read and write, you should be able to teach your children. The curriculum and teacher materials will help through the planning and teaching. Get help from others if you get stuck or hire tutors for the difficult subjects.
The rest are pretty similar. I’ve alerted the authorities.

Thanks Daryl for bringing this to my attention. As I stated in my rebuttal, I was interested in reading the article, but didn’t when I found I needed to register…until I heard from you. Here is my rebuttal: homesc...al.htm I haven’t made any moves with the paper yet, probably nothing can be done. I will probably at least send my rebuttal as a comment to the paper, but I’m waiting for guidance on my next steps. Beverly |
