OH, GOD!
Here we go again. Rita was just elevated to Category 5 status.
UPDATE: There appear to have been only 25 Category 5 hurricanes in the last 77 years.

I’m not prone to anxiousness. But *anxious* doesn’t begin to cover how I’m now feeling. We have several “Katrina” shelters here (Red Cross) and many informal ones. What are those people going to do? The volunteers now have their own issues. I talked to a dear friend today. She said that if she ever believed in the “end times” talk, now would be the time. |

Here is the list of years in which multiple Cat 4 or worse hurricanes have hit the mainland. 1915 If it’s any comfort, the folks at capitalweather.com are fairly sure it will scale back to a Cat 4 tonight, and stay there. The water is a couple of degrees cooler than when Katrina rolled through. |

We’ve got family evacuating tonight from Victoria. They are leaving around 3am, hoping some of the traffic is alleviated at that hour. |

Rita struck land as a category 3. The 1940’s still stand out as the worst decade on record for hurricane strikes. Be careful regarding media reports that look at the past 3 decades, as the 70’s and 80’s were very quiet relatively speaking. |
