The big statewide group in NC is comprised of a bunch of spineless wimps. Holy Crap! This article manages to outdo HSLDA at its worst.

“May result in more staff and regulations”? “If it is perceived…the law can be changed”? “Presumably”? Sounds like a lot of assumptions made here. The law is in black and white…no “mays”, “ifs”, or “cans” in the law that I can see. The sky may fall tomorrow so should I put my head between my legs and kiss my butt goodbye???

And how was this proposed change to put us under DPI done “quietly”? There was a good deal of communication between the state offices and NCHE during the entire process! Unless there had been a complete overhaul in the law that governs homeschools, this would have been an administrative change only. The law still stands that only test scores can be inspected…not homes. And since homeschoolers are volunteering info, the officials or anyone else can view it and make any assumption they want. Since the copies of test scores and attendance records are being sent in voluntarily and NOT PURSUANT TO LAW, they can be interpreted in any way, by anyone. There is no law protecting us if we send in things voluntarily. If we permit anyone into our homes to view records there is no law protecting us. Why can’t these folks get it through their thick heads that if we open ourselves up voluntarily we are out from under the protection that this so-called “model” law affords us? “Model law”…riiggghhhhttttt! Even HSLDA classifies NC as “moderate”. Out of 4 catagories NC is in the 3rd greatest regulated group.

And just *how* did homeschoolers tackle these past obstacles that Mike Taylor cites? By diligence…hard work…going to the legislature. How did we let the legislature know that we didn’t want homeschoolers governed by DPI? We sure weren’t sitting around hoping it didn’t happen. We made calls, sent emails, let our voice be heard. Is there any reason we can’t do that again? NCHE seems as though they’d rather boast about having the largest homeschool conference in this part of the country and feed barbeque lunches to the legislators than put up a fight to maintain the sovereignty of the family.

Because things used to be worse we should be happy the way they are now … according to your interpretation?

    I don’t think so.

Threats don’t go over very well with me either.

I’ll stop now while I’m still being polite.

No kidding. Like NCHE’s view is all that needs to be looked at. They act like the ones of us who started homeschooling after NCHE formed have no say in how things should be run in our state.

Just because they caved doesn’t mean the rest of us have to.
