LTTE UPDATE

Filed at 12:52 pm under by dcobranchi

I just had a very long conversation with Helder. He agreed that the police station was a bad idea and that DNPE will relocate the meeting. I also got agreement from him to insert “Optional” before the part about bringing the kids. I tried to get him to delete that part completely but was unsuccessful.

It’s really creepy that they want to inspect your kids.

YEAH! Great job, Daryl! That is a start at least.

Well, the whole thing is “optional.”

Doesn’t Mr. Helder have anything better to do with his time?

Helder seems to be a nice enough guy, but he’s stuck in the ’80s. In fact, the letter is actually from the ’80s with only minor updating.

When I asked why they wanted to meet the kids, he said this way if the media asks DNPE about homeschooling, they can honestly answer that the kids are being educated and are properly socialized. Yes, he actually used the “s”-word.

Oh wow, so it’s because they want to have an answer to media questions? And also, how are they going to tell if kids are “properly socialized” when they’re not observing them play with other kids? I mean, isn’t that the point of the socialization issue to most people, that homeschooling kids don’t spend enough time around other kids? How will they be able to discern “proper” socialization without other kids there?

Also, if I were you, I’d ask him to specifically list the criteria by which they will be measuring education and socialization. You shouldn’t let him get away with vague statements like that: if they’re doing an evaluation — and by what he said, that’s what they’re doing — then you have a right to know what specifically they’ll be looking for in each of those categories as well as what their criteria are for measuring them.

But I hope nobody brings their kids to this thing. They truly are planning to do some sort of evaluation of the kids. THey’re not planning to just check paperwork.

Crap. “Educated” and “properly socialized”? What are they gonna do? Give the kids tests at this visit? Have tea?

He can kiss my asocial behaviour.

So much can be accomplished by just picking up the phone, and yet so few people do. Good work.

“Helder seems to be a nice enough guy…”

Maybe so, but there are a lot of nice guys who are also inept. I think Helder’s initiation of this new “process” qualifies for ineptitude. Certainly, his comment about socialization does.

I think someone should start a movement to have him replaced. As is, Helder as head of DNPE is embarrassing and unnecessarily stress-inducing for NC homeschoolers.

I think I already did that with my LttE.

Yep. I wonder how many of the folks who actually received the letters picked up the phone. I would hope many.

I just noticed — we don’t need to ask or consider the party affiliation of this guy or the administration of behalf of which he’s issuing this ham-handed garbage, before we join in to judge, protest and mock it! 🙂

So, do they evaluate the private schools to make sure the kids are properly socialize and educated?????

The homeschooling law does not address either of these non issues, it defines paperwork only. He is way out of line.

Thankfully we only have local-level drama with school officials, and nothing statewide yet…
