“FREE” SCHOOL
Free as in Sudbury, not as in beer.
Here’s a pretty good piece on an “unschool.” The reporter even makes the connection to unschooling. Worth a read.

Hey, cool! I got to visit the school, as part of my graduate work. It IS a little piece of utopia – but it really wasn’t that “unschooly” – more Pestalozzi than unschooling. Nontheless, JT Gatto made his famous teacher of the year speech about this time – and soon after latched onto the school as a model for schools that unschool. It sounds like SVS has moved further to the unschooling side, possibly with Gatto’s influence. A few weeks after my “utopian” experience, I visited a school in Roxbury. I road the train over, got off, and was met and accompanied by a policeman to the site. Prisons are better. My purpose was to sit in a counseling group after school hours with a number of teens. The pre-requisite to be in that group…each group member had a family member that died because of gun/gang violence – many kids had multiple members killed over the years. Ugh! What a difference a few miles makes… |

Visit – as in SVS, not Clearwater. Sorry for not being clear b/t SVS and Clearwater. |
