I dropped our older daughter Katelyn, 13, off at the North Carolina School of the Arts (NCSA) this morning. Wow! What a place! NCSA is a pretty unusual program with both a 4-year college and boarding high school co-located on a beautiful campus in Winston-Salem. The college students pay regular tuition, but the high school is “free.” That is, during the regular school year.

Katelyn is there for their 5-week Summer Session. Distinctly not free. But still worth every penny for some of the best dance training available in the US.

I’m so proud of her for putting in the hard work to get accepted to this competitive program. Her goal is to use this summer as a stepping stone to getting accepted there for high school.

    Break a leg, kid.

Congrats. We should start a support group for fathers of driven, ambitious daughters pursuing expensive passions 😉

At least none have gone into ice skating or gymnastics. That’s where the serious money gets spent.

    Hi Daryl:
Congrats to you and “MERDE” to your daughter! 😉

In the dance world it’s taboo to wish “Break a Leg” as dancers could actually do that on stage. “MERDE”( meaning SH*T in French) is considered the “Good Luck” for ballet.

Why they chose this word instead of something else I am not quite sure. Tis another strange custom of the performing arts.

I didn’t know that. Cool. Thanks, Traci. BTW, Christina was Katelyn’s inspiration for wanting to go to NCSA. Don’t know if you knew that Christina attended there on a scholarship. I wonder if the instructors there will curse the girls out in Russian.

Hey again! Yes I did know Miss K went there to study.
This will be my Jessi’s first year starting summer intensive at FSBT. Today was our trip to the ballet store for character shoes. skirt, new slippers & such. We got out of there spending less than $200. Yippee! I was expecting at least $250. No pointe shoes yet for her, maybe after Nutcracker season. The school is really growing and they are adding another studio at The Grand this Fall! We’ll miss seeing Katelyn here this summer.
I hope she has a wonderful experience!!!!
