MI UPDATE

Valerie notes that there’s a follow-up to the MI article from the other day. If you’re interested in following this one, I’d suggest first reading the comments on the original piece, then the update, and finally the comments on the update.

Here’s a fun quote from the original comments thread:

“The public schools seem to be a choice for convenience in return for exposure to all sorts of social pathologies.”

Heh.

A most recent commenter notes that since homeschoolers submit to regulation when they purchase a car (because cars have emission controls and are otherwise regulated) and since homeschoolers submit to regulation when they get their driver’s licenses, why shouldn’t their “homeschooling efforts” be regulated?

I really try not to get drawn in to these things – and I sometimes fail in that. But this kind of thinking really has me “aghast,” to use their word.

Scary that people are so willing to give up my freedom without any understanding of what it might mean for their own.

I agree, Jeanne. But many people don’t think and wouldn’t know how to behave if they had to make educated decisions rather than follow rules. It’s easier to ‘follow the leader’ than to think for oneself, yes?
