    Your government is illegally spying on you and there’s absolutely no one who can (or will) stop it.

    Power corrupts, y’know.

    Just what I’ve been chatting about on a list this morning… scary stuff.

    From the article you linked to, Daryl, these parts could have been taken right from the NC DNPE’s playbook.

    “(1) If unchecked power is vested in government officials, they’re going to abuse that power;

    (2) If government officials exercise power without real oversight from other branches, they’re going to break the law and then lie about it, falsely denying that they’re done so, insisting instead that they’re only using their powers to Protect Us; ”

    Oh, I’ve coined a new name for the cozy DNPE-NCHE relationship, a hyphenated name to indicate their blissful, peachy union:

    DNPee-CHee

    Unchecked power vested in ANYBODY corrupts, with the excuse it’s for our own good.
    Husbands, fathers and priests too.
    Hence the expression that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

    (The same fellow said this too, fitting for the current silly season in Democratic politics, yes?)

    “The one pervading evil of democracy is the tyranny of the majority, or rather of that party, not always the majority, that succeeds by force or fraud, in carrying elections.”

    And what really pisses me off is that the Bush administration would still have been spying on Americans even without the Patriot Act or the Protect America Act. Absolutely no respect for the Constitution or the American people.
