DELAYED BUT NOT DENIED
The mom who (allegedly) perpetrated the MySpace bullying/hoax that led to a young teen’s suicide has been indicted. Until today it looked like she was going to get off.

Good. I’m hoping that the delay was caused by people just figuring out which charges to press against her. With a little luck, some good can come from this in the form of updating laws to cover online stuff. |

Unfortunately, if the charges stick we’ll have turned lying on a web form into a federal felony. The federal prosecutor is using some truly warped logic and reading of the law to invent a new crime here. It’s unfortunate that the law as written didn’t anticipate this, but inventing laws after the fact is not a good solution. |

One morning during first grade, my son remarked, “You know, dad, school is just like jail…” “Really, how so?” “Well, you HAVE to go, you can’t do what you want, only what they tell you to do.” I regret disagreeing with him on the grounds that he got to come home every afternoon and didn’t have to go on the weekends. I wish I had taken his observation more seriously and pulled him out then instead of a year and a half later after the first month of third grade. Better late than never, I suppose… |
