I’M NOT SO SURE
A local columnist here thinks students don’t have Free Speech rights. The SCOTUS disagreed. In 1969.
UPDATE: My email:
I just read Monday’s column. Sorry but I couldn’t disagree more. The kid has a good case. In fact, the SCOTUS addressed it in 1969 in Tinkers v. Des Moines School District (http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/comm/free_speech/tinker.html). The school (in the present case) replicated EXACTLY the actions from 4 decades ago. Have we repealed the 1st Amendment in the interim? I must have missed the memo.
I find it strange that someone who makes her living working for a paper that can exist because of the First Amendment is so willing to deny those same freedoms to another citizen.
Cross-posted to the Fayetteville Observer blog. Yes, I throw bombs there, too.
