ZOMG!!! OBAMA WANTS TO OUTLAW HOMESCHOOLING!!!!!!!!
At least that’s the way some of the far right fringe will choose to misinterpret this statement:
Q. Do you support home schooling?
A. Barack Obama respects the decisions reached by some parents to home school their children, provided those parents are conforming to the laws and regulations set forward by their states governing home-based instruction.

Yep, it sure sounds like the end of homeschooling. Not. At least there’s an answer somewhere that we can point people to when they ask “yes, but doesn’t he hate all hsers?” Nance |

The original version of this post had a snide aside for Spunky. I edited it out because I thought even she couldn’t take the Obama Derangement Syndrome that far. I should have trusted my first instinct. spunky...g.html |

Notice in the comments at Spunky’s that she says Obama’s statement is “saying nothing” then less than a half-hour later she’s moved to a man who would “restrict the right of a parent to educate their children as they see fit”. And she says that the Obama supporters are the ones who will infer a meaning that isn’t there! |

His statement says nothing. Don, I said “a man” not Obama. That was intentional. I couldn’t say that about him because I don’t know if he would restrict the right to homeschool. Thus I used the generic “a man.” it was a direct response to another commenter who chose to marginalize Obama’s homeschool stance in favor of the more important issue of abortion. I then established that both were important and said, “Obama’s stance on homeschooling is telling not just about educational freedom, but how he values a ciizen’s right to pursue their own happiness. The more we know about a candidate before they take the oath of office the better off we’ll all be.” I haven’t inferred any position out of his statement. But it appears that others want to think that I’ve done exactly that. My encouragement is to read what’s written and if you’re uncertain just ask. I’m pretty straight forward. I don’t parse words. I seek to be as clear as possible. But in the event you think something is ambiguious just ask. |

Spunky, the way you worded that statement, in a discussion about Obama, makes it sound like you are attributing it to Obama, whether you meant it that way or not. Thank you for clarifying. The problem is that you are looking for an answer to a question that wasn’t asked; you are wanting the question “Will you enact laws that restrict or prohibit homeschooling?” addressed, when the question was “Do you support homeschooling?” It is a very vague question, and we received a very vague answer. Besides, he’ll have more pressing issues to deal with when he takes office. 🙂 |

Thanks for the link. I think it’s pretty clear cut he supports homeschooling as long as you follow the laws in your state. Homeschool laws are more a STATE ISSUE then a FEDERAL one. It doesn’t sound like he has any plans to change that. |

Alasandra, it’s only clear if you are actually trying to read for understanding. If you are taking the “we can never know what this devil actually means” approach to every statement, there is no clarity. Nance |

If patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel, intellectual dishonesty must be the last refuge of a dying campaign. |

Obama: I respect your decision to homeschool. True meaning: Give me your children. I have a pot of water already boiling. McCain: I respect your decision to homeschool. True meaning: I super-love homeschoolers! Have a pony and a trampoline, on me! |
