It looks like the SYM Symba is only going to be available in 100 cc size. Anything over 50 cc would require a motorcycle license and insurance. That’s a deal breaker for me. So, I’m going to go with a classically-styled scooter, the Honda Metropolitan.

And you will stay the hell out of my way, right? Or maintain a decent speed?

Back roads or on the shoulder only. It’s only 1 mile to DuPont from my house. Once I get out of my neighborhood, it’s only about 1/2 mile. The chances that you’ll meet me on the road, Nance, are pretty small. 🙂

Good. There are enough of these clogging things up around here. And none of them seem to know about that “shoulder” thing.

Between our senior drivers who don’t, apparently, have to stop at stop signs, our snowbirds forever lost (bless their little wallets) and bikers displaying their cute shorts, sometimes it’s quite an adventure getting around. 🙂

Having owned a scooter myself, I highly recommend taking a motorcycle safety course. Even though the one you’re looking at won’t top 25-30mph, it’s still a good idea. Plus, you may find you like it so much that you want to upgrade to a scooter with a larger engine or a motorcycle.

No chance of upgrading. I almost died on a Yamaha 550 Vision (one of the earliest pocket rockets). I’ve only been on a bike once since then. I rode a friend’s around a parking lot years later. Still got that queasy feeling in my stomach.

I’m considering the scooter only because I don’t have to have insurance or a license for anything under 50cc. And it will only ever be ridden between home and work, A total of 4 miles round trip, with 2 of those being inside the confines of the site

Yeah, I could ride a bicycle. But I’m lazy.

    Yay for lazy!

You could always get a moped? (Kidding, kidding…)

I second the motion for a motorcycle safety course. I’ve taken PA’s course, and I was very impressed. Well worth the time.

Do compare scooters. Even if you’ll be on the shoulder, you’ll want enough power and maneuverability to dodge the cars.
