Those are two different bills. My kids are young so I haven’t done this yet, but in Utah each year you send notification to your school district that you’re homeschooling and they send back an exemption letter. I guess if a truancy officer comes knocking it would be useful. You can also use them to get teacher discounts at Barnes & Noble etc. One district around here has been notorious for never sending back the exemption letter, hence SB146 that will require them to do it in a month.

The other bill addresses (SB 61) homeschoolers participating in extracurricular activities. I’m not sure what to think about it – there are already laws on the books saying that we can, I think this one clarifies that a kid can participate if their parents say their academic progress is good enough, no other proof is required.

    Daryl,

This is off topic for this post, but just wanted to say something…If we thought Obama sounded presidential at the Democratic convention last summer, he’s proven tonight that was no fluke…

I’m glad to hear the Desnews/Trib rivalry continues in my absence. I left the state in ’99 – too many dang Mormons. 🙂

I’ve read your strong opinions about giving homeschooled students access to public school extracurricular stuff, but for me, as long as it doesn’t bug me, I don’t care if other parents chose to get involved with some stuff public schools do.
