I blame the parents. They are spending thousands of dollars a year to send their kids to a private school and, most likely, providing the cellphones that their kids use to kill time in class.

Anthony (our oldest) has observed one of his good friends spending her whole time in class texting and ignoring the lecture. And her grades reflect the effort she’s putting in. He knows that his phone is to be turned off from the time he leaves for class until he gets home. He also knows that he’d lose his phone for a long time (months, years, decades) if he violates the rules.

FYI, I just came across one homeschool mom’s comprehensive, and imo very sensible, analysis of kids and cell phones at Kim’s Play Place.

    My favorite quote:

“I am going to be bored in class,” junior Robert Sandiege said. “I can’t text anymore.”

Robert predicts that students will start sleeping in class when they can’t text to stay awake. At least sleeping has some benefits!

There were weeks in college that the only sleep I got was in class 🙂

I didn’t realize a prepaid plan was such a novel idea 🙂 Michelle and I have had prepaid cell phones through Virgin Mobile for several years. I have two teens and neither has a cell phone. Neither has asked for one either.

Same here. Alltel prepaid for at least 3 years. Katelyn got a phone when she went away to NCSA for the summer. The campus was spread out enough that she needed one to coordinate schedules. Anthony got one just before getting his driver’s license. More for his parents’ peace of mind than anything.

Did anyone catch the ad at the bottom of this article?

So in an article admonishing kids for using texting during class time, they place an ad for people to sign up for *text alerts* on your cell phone, from this very newspaper.

    Oh, the Irony.

Yep, DavD started out with Virgin Mobile too, $25 dollars a prepay increment and for our conveneience so she could call us to pick her up from musical rehearsals without us waiting around for hours instead. She was 13 or 14 as I recall. But then she started college classes too and we added her to our family plan with a texting, photo-taking phone. She’s turning 19 now and the new challenge is all this crazy stuff about how the heck to buy an “unlocked” phone with sim cards that will work in the European countries she’s visiting without us this summer (any help?)

JJ, I did not learn to drive until I moved back to FL — in my late 30s. 🙂

Hey JJ, thanks for mentioning the post.

Prepaid cell phones were a bit of a novelty to me. Targeted to people who had declared bankruptcy or who had no actual intention of using it because the minutes were so much more expensive than a contract plan. I certainly don’t mind if my daughter has to pay more for minutes. I don’t expect her to use enough to keep her busy all through class!
