{"id":10083,"date":"2009-09-24T21:07:43","date_gmt":"2009-09-25T01:07:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cobranchi.com\/?p=10083"},"modified":"2009-09-24T21:07:43","modified_gmt":"2009-09-25T01:07:43","slug":"heads-up-ak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cobranchi.com\/?p=10083","title":{"rendered":"HEADS UP: AK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The state is looking at regulating home ed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Alaska has the most lax home-schooling law in the country.<\/p>\n<p>No one even knows how many Alaska children stay home instead of attending a public or private school \u2014 they aren\u2019t tracked or monitored.<\/p>\n<p>Home-school advocates say the lack of reporting and regulation is the way it should be because it leaves parents free to make choices for the child. But others say it leaves an uncounted number of children at the mercy of parents who don\u2019t have what it takes to give kids what they need to avoid being left behind in life.<\/p>\n<p>The tension between the two camps \u2014 traditional bricks-and-mortar educators and fiercely independent home-schooling parents \u2014 has existed for years with each bad-mouthing the other for real or perceived inadequacies.<\/p>\n<p>Should Alaska join the ranks of other states by tightening its home-schooling laws?<\/p>\n<p>State Education Commissioner Larry LeDoux wants to at least ask the question.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetundradrums.com\/news\/show\/7359\">article<\/a> is <i>very<\/i> one-sided.
