{"id":5570,"date":"2005-10-05T05:42:02","date_gmt":"2005-10-05T05:42:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cobranchi.com\/wp\/?p=5570"},"modified":"2005-10-05T05:42:02","modified_gmt":"2005-10-05T05:42:02","slug":"six-is-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cobranchi.com\/?p=5570","title":{"rendered":"SIX <I>IS<\/i> ENOUGH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/education\/k_12\/articles\/2005\/10\/03\/cities_eye_longer_school_days\/?rss_id=Boston.com+%2F+News\">it should be<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>BOSTON &#8211;Some of the state&#8217;s largest school districts are among at least 20 that are exploring plans to extend the day in some of their schools by about two hours.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;School officials say the traditional schedule &#8212; 6-hour days, 180 total days &#8212; doesn&#8217;t provide enough time, especially with the increased demands of standardized testing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The hours in the school day just aren&#8217;t enough for us,&#8221; Mary Russo, principal of Boston&#8217;s Murphy K-8 School, told The Boston Globe on Monday&#8217;s editions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;If you have students who have more limited learning opportunities at home, because their parents are working extra hours, or because there are some resource limitations at home, if we can have that added work time with students as part of the school day, that&#8217;s extremely helpful,&#8221; Springfield Superintendent Joseph Burke said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Two ugly ideas in the same article&#8211; the tests are <i>evil<\/i> and the source of all evil.  And they have to deny parole for an extra two hours because some kids might not have a set of encyclopedias at home.  <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m no fan of NCLB, as I think it was a set-up from the start.  Eventually (~2014), every school in the country will be termed &#8220;failing.&#8221;  That&#8217;s the way the law is designed.  And I believe that it was intentional&#8211; a disingenuous way to get to vouchers for all.  But the educrats have their own flavor of disingenuousness.  Witness above.  They know parents aren&#8217;t going to go for an extra two hours of school.
