WORST. UMPIRING. EVER.
The umpires at last night’s Yankees-Angels game should not be allowed near an MLB park ever again. Blown calls left and right, including a rules interpretation by the crew chief that was so obviously wrong that I was amazed the Angels didn’t play the game under protest.
The umpires are making a joke of the playoffs. MLB had better do something about how crews are chosen for the postseason. The current “system” is broken.

I’d like to the umpires lose the balls and strikes call. There is no reason that can’t be automated and be 100% consistent. |

Boston got a couple of shockingly bad calls at first base in their outings this post-season too. Did you see the NYT Sunday? Apparently it’s the — vocational — education, stupid! 😉 |

The crew chief gave an interview after the game in which he said he thought Cano was on the base when he was tagged. So he didn’t blow a rule interpretation. He’s just blind. Cano was at least a foot off the bag and standing still. Yes, he really called Cano safe after that tag. |

Not the way it looked — I really think they blew the interpretation of the rule but then realized that “blindness” would be the only possible justification to get them out of having to admit it and live with that problem. |

I think it was because he was facing the play. His eyes are in the back of his head. That’s how he saw Swisher leave “early” when he was facing the outfield. |

I have no dog in this fight because I see baseball (three hour game containing 10 +/- minutes of action) as possibly the most boring way to coax oneself into a nap. But I do find it interesting that MLB doesn’t train the umps they use. Umpires get their training through private schools. |
