FUCK GM!
For years and years they claimed that their surveys said consumers didn’t care about mpg. They lied.
Well, this reinforces my earlier decision to never buy a GM product.

GM vehicles are just butt-ugly anyway. |

This little conservative free-market boy arrived at the same conclusion by a different path. I don’t care who lied, I don’t care about govt regulations – the Accord and the Scion Xb where what we wanted, so they get my business. The free market doesn’t reward companies run by fools, I wish govt. wouldn’t either. Now we’ve got my children’s taxes propping up a failed auto industry, and even Daryl, the most liberal guy I know, refuses to help make the business viable. Can’t say I blame him, but I can sure be mad at the govt. |

I don’t see this as the free market working. How is it working when a company ignores demand? I’ve wanted another really high mpg car for years. GM used to have one. Suzuki made it for them – the Chevy Sprint/Geo Metro. I owned two and loved them. How high? I could get 60+ mpg on extended highway trips, and go 40+ while delivering newspapers. Even today, Suzuki makes what looks to be a successor. The mileage isn’t as good, what with all the newer safety features. The problem? It’s only available in an all wheel drive model with lots of bells and whistles. I want two wheel drive – I’ll add snow tires, and I want basic. I never believed the “common knowledge” that people just didn’t want fuel efficient cars. Good to see that the auto industry was so responsive. Clearly it’s not just the American companies though. Honda and Toyota aren’t making any REALLY fuel efficient cars at the lower end either. I don’t want fuel efficiency merely for my energy consumption – I’d actually like to save some cash as well. |

Rob, You didn’t ask why I won’t buy a GM product. It’s because they’re a major sponsor of Sean Hannity’s hate fest. I thought it hilarious the day Obama announced the GM bailout and Hannity couldn’t figure out if he was supposed to be for them or against them. |

“I don’t see this as the free market working. How is it working when a company ignores demand?” Well, the American auto industry has sucked for decades at ignoring people like you and me. They have done a great job of giving the people who aren’t like you and me what they like. So gas goes up to $3.75 a gal in 2008, suddenly everyone is like you and me, and GM gets a huge govt bailout because they’re “too big to fail”. The free market would have worked just fine if GM didn’t get it’s gubbment bailout check. |

We’re looking at different parts of the free market not working. You’re looking at the bail out. I’m going back further. The free market didn’t work in terms of the auto industry ignoring a large part of the market If the free market were really working, we’d have seen someone step into the gap to provide cars along the lines of what we want. It’s not just the American automakers either. My 1979 Honda Civic has little in common with it’s current day counterpart past it’s name tags. The auto companies know they have no competition to speak of from mass transportation here, so they don’t see any need to have “starter” cars or more efficient cars. People argue against subsidies for public transportation, but they forget the huge subsidy the auto industry gets by way of paved public roadways. Public transportation would be useful and would level that playing field in ways that would force the auto industry to be more repsonsive. |

My GM experiences have been blog fodder before — in case you don’t want to read my whole life story, here’s a hint: it backs up Daryl and Karen’s observations, maybe even Rob’s. |

Argh. My brain knows the difference between its and it’s. My fingers sometimes have ideas of their own. Sorry about that. Thanks for letting me call myself on it folks. 🙂 |
