Super expensive tennis shoes– defintely one of my pet peeves.

With either the first day of school looming next week or with it having passed, students are pressed to get the latest foot trend. Prices vary, but expect to plunk down at least $55.

…The find must be a certain pair of Nikes, New Balance or Reeboks.

…”On the first day of school, they have to be dressed to impress and have the best.”

Olivia Vogel, 13: “If you don’t wear the cutest clothes you get dirty looks and can get picked on.”

That’s no doubt true. And one wonders whether Miss Olivia gives as good as she gets. Still, there are great swaths of kids who either don’t care what’s cool or wouldn’t be caught dead in what’s cool, on principle. These kids don’t make it into newspaper articles because they aren’t standing in line like a bunch of sheep. Then there are parents who give their kids a clothes budget and tell them, if they want to blow 90% of it on one pair of shoes or jeans, that’s fine, but they’ll have to live with the consequences. They don’t get into newspaper articles either.

My daughter has never carried a purse but she needed one this year so she could carry her learner’s permit. (!!!!) (Which means she can carry her own library card, and so forth, which unclutters my wallet.) She picked out a purse she liked but she almost didn’t get it because it looked too much like what the “cool” girls carry. I had to explain reverse snobbery to her and tell her it’s almost as bad as the real thing.

My 9 year old son is partial to Nike, but we can always find them decently priced at the discount shoe places. They may be last years model – but how do you tell? They all t\look the same to me.
