A Brooklyn high school has nuked the physics class even though kids had signed up for it. It still offers “Environmental Science,” though.

Saw an article in our local paper a few months ago. Apparently, our school district spent a fair amount of money having an audit done to see how they can save money. (First suggestion: stop ordering expensive audits.) One of the suggestions that came out of the audit was that classes with under 15 students should be closed. The paper reported on one of our FAILING schools (average scores in the 30th percentile range) that actually had 11 kids taking physics. The teacher said they were highly motivated, they were attending class and doing their homework. And there was a picture of them in the lab, looking very happy and engaged. I hope they did not shut that class down. If by accidental oversight some hapless teacher manages to bring a shred of the joy of learning to some otherwise deprived kids, it would be just like the bureaucracy to shut that down.
