SCHOOL DAYS, SNOW DAYS
Homeschoolers just can’t catch a (snow) break.
Christine Monroy, who homeschools five of her six children at the family’s Bowmansdale home, said she notices the kids tend to lose a lot of learning time to snowy days.
There’s the shoveling, then the kids want to play in the snow before it disappears.
Still, the lessons have to be completed, even if they continue into the evening, Monroy said.
“That’s the big joke, that one of the downsides to homeschooling is you never get a real snow day,” she said.
We also don’t let the kids take snow days. But, Lydia usually cuts back on the required work (especially if the snow will be short lived).

Rather than taking a day off, sometimes we just make snow the lesson. Science weather projects/experiments etc… sometimes a history lesson, safety in snow & bad weather, reading stories w/ a snow theme, art projects, it just goes on & on. Oh yea there is some play in the snow fun & the not so shoveling jobs as well. |

It is snowing even over here in the UK today which obviously brings the whole country to a standstill. Our unschooling approach is to go out and play in it, for as long as we bloody well like. Then when the neighbours kids come home from school we play in it some more. Oh, and when they go to bed (Because they have got school tomorrow) we play in it some more. And do you know what we are going to do tomorrow? Play in it some more! “We never have a snow day” Hardly seems worth taking them out of school if you can’t do that! |

If snow were a rarity here, we’d take the day off for sure. Last year the public schools missed two weeks due to snow. They had to make them up in June while my kids were in the pool. |

Cool! By the way did you get my email about HONDA. Someone in our group asked me about it and I knew nothing (As per usual). But I did say “I know a man who will know so I shall ask him.” YOU are that man. |
