OFF WITH HIS HEAD
The New York Times is calling for EdSec Paige’s resignation because of the “terrorist organization” flap. I think they’re likely to get it.

I sure hope not – because his “apology” was brilliant 🙂 It’s not that I think NCLB is a good thing – but anybody unafraid to take a poke at the NEA is one of the good guys! |

I applaud the sentiment, but I kinda wish this fellow hadn’t poked his head out of the belly of the NCLB Trojan horse — it was just starting to do its real job of getting the feds out of education. |

Paige probably won’t resign, at least in the near term. Bush is in heavy pander-to-the-base mode right now (See marriage, homosexuals and), and any move that even smacks of placating the NEA won’t play well. Paige’s remarks aren’t a big national story, despite the NYT’s protestations, and it won’t cost Bush any support he currently has. That said, look for Paige to move on after the election if Bush wins. Bush will possibly look to appoint a current or former governor to the EdSec position to shore up the spot politically. |
