ONE OF OUR OWN
A local homeschooler was killed in a bike accident yesterday. Sadly, he wasn’t wearing a helmet. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE enforce a helmet rule when your kids are out riding. ER doctors have a name for bicyclists and bikers who don’t wear helmets on the road. They call them “organ donors.”

Not just kids, ALL riders need helmets!! Roads, bike paths, mountain bike; it doesn’t matter. FWIW, I’m in my late 40’s, been riding since college, and ride more than 2500 miles a year. I know how to handle a bike in traffic, but I don’t EVER go out of my driveway without a helmet. |

And horses. Use of approved (ASTM) helmets have reduced riding-related head injuries by as much as 50%. |

Helmets aren’t just for bikes and horses, either. Make sure your skaters (inline and board-types) are wearing them as well. Finally, for you winter sports nuts, do a little “metacognitive criticism.” Every year I see families on the ski slopes, and every child is wearing a helmet. But Dad? He’s Mr Macho in Ray-Bans, not even wearing a HAT! Well, at least after the accident, the kids will be able to visit him in the nursing home. |

And they aren’t just for bikes and horse and skaters either. You MUST wear a helmet when on a jet ski. Otherwise, at high speed, you could be killed if you fell off. Not good. |
