It’s different over there. Carlotta on a promotional blitz by The Old Schoolhouse magazine:

The reaction to the news that the people from the Old Schoolhouse Magazine are winging their way over here from the States with quite a number of dates for a promotional tour has been greeted with considerable dismay on several UK Home Education lists. The thing that is causing particular bother is the TOS’s connections with child batterers Debi and Michael Pearl, whose books promoting corporal punishment, even for babies, are sickening in the extreme.

I don’t know anything about the Pearls or their beliefs. Has this been a subject of discussion over here that I simply missed?

NOTE: It’s a blogspot permalink. Iffy at best.

There was a huge furor over at the Mothering forums when TOS placed ads. Mothering is *very* crunchy-granola attachment parenting.
makes me wonder why TOS even though of placing an ad there.

The Pearls are famous for their “To Train Up a Child” series. Here are some tidbits:

    Reviews:

    stopth...J.html “No Greater Joy”

    and

stopth...c.html “To Train Up a Child”

Nobody with an IQ about 60 would seriously consider using these books as a guide to raising children, which is why millions of Christians use them “religiously”.

I read both of those links to the book material, and it honestly doesn’t seem like that could be a real book. It’s rather shocking to read some of the stuff they advocate.

TOS carries references to, articles by and adverts for the Pearls, whose books recommend corporal punishment for children of all ages. Check out Amazon for “To Train Up A Child”:(

Whilst the TOS promotors have said that they do not necessarily endorse everything on their site, they say on their homepage: “We are privileged to have noted authors featured in the magazine and on the website. Check out our “How to Homeschool” page on the website to read some past articles that have appeared in the magazine. See great articles and interviews written by:…inter alia: Michael and Debi”; and on the German section of their European tour they are planning to meet up and do presentations with the Pearls.

There is anxiety here in the UK that associations between child battery and HE may cause us (and the reputation of US homeschoolers) some harm.

(Oh and by the by, I just wish someone of techie bent, would do all the techy stuff for me…Dh says I must do it myself as a good learning curve, but up till now it looks much more like a learning full stop…so for the moment, apologies for dodgy permalinks).

TOS, the Pearls, child abuse, “homeschoolblogger”, homophobia. Sorry, just doing a bit of word association with myself.

    Carlotta,

No apologies necessary for the dodgy (I love that word– wish we used it here) permalinks. I started out on blogspot almost 4 years ago. No permalinks and no comments. Their software really hasn’t improved very much since then.

Almost as a matter of course, I sit here marvelling at the freshness and zing of US English – which makes it good to hear that the UK version might sound a tad unusual!
