    Godwin wins.

“I’m worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don’t appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us — more evil or as evil as Nazism and probably more dangerous than the Soviet communists we fought during the long Cold War,” Lieberman said.

Yeah, a bunch of guys with doctored Coke cans are far more dangerous than was the Soviet Union. After all, they only had thousands of thermonuclear weapons.

This one was easily foreseen. Making a binary explosive is a piece of cake. A mixture of alcohol and nitric acid makes rocket fuel (Nitral). The airlines conveniently provide alcohol (or one could purchase it at the duty-free shop). Nitric acid would have to be smuggled aboard, but it’s a clear, colorless liquid. Until today, it would have been easy to get it on board. A half-full 1 liter soda bottle would be plenty. Add an equal volume of alcohol. Seal the system and wait 30 seconds. No detonator required.

Of course, if I were part of a terror cell, I’d have two folks traveling together. One with the nitric acid and the other with Everclear (95% EtOH). Bourbon or vodka are diluted with a lot of water, so the reaction is slowed and the energy released significantly less.

Could they destroy the US in a heartbeat? Could they even take out a small town?

When I was eight, there were fallout shelters in every school, and we had regular drills for what to do WHEN the Russians attacked. That was 1970 (i.e., before SALT I).

There was a lot of hysteria back then. Remember, this wasn’t that many years after the Cuban Missle Crisis (which really WAS almost the start of WWIII).

Admittedly, the mid ’50s was probably worse. None of my neighbors built bomb shelters in their backyard

And I think Hezbollah. poses zero threat to the US. They’re primary motivation is Israel’s occupation of Arab lands. Al Qaeda is a different group with different motivations.

If I’m correct, Al Quaeda is Sunni and Hezbollah is Shi’ite, correct? I don’t see them playing nicely together even if they do both hate The Great Satan.
