The State (Columbia, SC) has a (rare) thoughtful Op/Ed on politics and school choice. PPIC is Gov. Mark Sanford’s (failed) proposed tax credit for non-public education.

There are only two comments, by the same person, as of my reading this, but he raises some interesting points. This is yet one more area in which I think most discussion is very incorrectly focused. I also think that the only way any school system can really work well is to be focused on meeting the needs of the family as opposed to churning out a body of students equally well versed in the “body of knowledge.” I don’t see that as possible in most school systems because we can’t force families and parents to be involved, and we don’t have enough involved families and parents to make a difference.

Then I think how much better my family has it. The closest we ever have to get to a school is our Tuesday night soccer practice. And that’s just fine with me. I might be willing to get involved with a wholesale destruction and rebuilding of what currently passes for public education, but anything short of that just won’t cut it.
