    Really, how hard is it to figure out that schools should not be distributing Bibles?

    I’m curious, though. The article didn’t make it clear, but I’ll bet it wasn’t the school distributing the New Testaments. My guess is that it was the Gideons. And if so, I think there’s less of an issue of government-sponsored religion. As a former Gideon myself, we’re very non-pushy about handing out Testaments, because we want to avoid any appearance of forcing kids to take them, whether by peer pressure or anything.

    It’s sad to say that I’d rather see the “real deal” in schools than curriculum that’s altered to present the biblical Am-centric view:

    biblei...s.net/

    dthame...lash=1
    (David Baron’s program for schools beyond hs’ing)

    What I meant to add was that with the “real deal”, it cracks open a door for equal opportunity (Koran, Bagavadgita, Torah/Kaballa…).

    So the kids would get a comparative religion class? That sounds grand. But that’s not passing out bibles — Gideon or otherwise.

    A comparative religions class would never work in public school. The last thing many parents want is their offspring exposed to alternate religions that may be more meaningful for them than the religion provided by mom and dad.

    It’s not just what schools give the kids but what they take away from them in the name of education . . . ban those cupcakes and purses!

    I suppose the Wiccans can get in there and start passing out Tarot cards, eh?
