This last photo is admittedly hard to make out. I was attempting to show the clay structure that never quite made it to slate. According to a field book I saw on fossil collecting in NC, this deposit on the creek in my backyard is one of the best places to dig in the state. The “rocks” are very soft and split easily. The first one I grabbed today had a small fossil of what looked like a snail.

UPDATE: I meant to point out that judging by the wildlife found in this creek, the waters are quite clean. The color is due to tannins that are extracted from the oaks in these parts.
