I REALLY REALLY WANT
one of these. Sadly, we live in one of the worst areas of the country for wind power.

Cost needs to come down still. The typical homeowner is looking at a 6-12 year payback on the investment. Probably needs to be in the 3-5 year range for it to really take off. Also, the turbines need to get more efficient so that a small dish sized windmill can be placed on roof and make a significant impact. It’s never going to be practical for 80% of the population to place a 100 foot tower on their property. |

It seems that vertical design turbines might be better suited for small-scale use. Roof-top designs are already available. |

Mother Earth News recently ran an article about (sub)urban wind generators. They’re much shorter (under 50′) than “traditional” wind turbines. |

A neighbor wants one too, however the development’s Civic Association is trying to squash his request in this deed restricted development. Stay tuned though, cause if he gets one we just might be next. |

Just found this one that looks neat. I have absolutely no idea if it lives up to its promises (noiseless and more efficient than “traditional” propeller turbines), but it certainly is more aesthetically appealing. |
