Here’s a nice little piece on craft brewing in the US. One of the hobbies I’ll definitely take up some day is homebrewing. The first (and only) Delaware Beach Blogger Weekend was held at the original Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats in Lewes. The 90 Minute IPA is phenomenal.

The “problem” with homebrewing is that you are making beer in 5 gallon batches. With the usual amount of waste, that will usually result in 2 cases of beer. Back when I was young and we had friends over drinking all the time etc it was worth the effort. Today 2 cases would likely last me 4 months. Not worth the hassle in my opinion. However I retain the knowledge should I ever need to make my own beer again.

If you decide to do it, skip the bottling all together and put together a keg system. Bottling was always my least favorite part of the process. An old fridge and used soda fountain parts from a restaurant distributor can give you draft on tap 24 x 7 for a couple of hundred bucks.

Hubby says homebrewing isn’t worth it with all the microbrews on the market now, so it’s been a long time since we’ve done it. Nonetheless, I’d like to do a unit study on it some day, as we’ve already got all the equipment. I agree with COD – bottling is a big fat pain. Not so much the bottling itself, as the getting the bottles clean part.

COD, to make it worth it, consumption-wise, you just have to hold a homebrew party.

For me,whether it’s “worth it” or not isn’t a factor. I like homebrewing. Even though it’s a pain in the butt, I get a certain amount of satisfaction from making my own beer.

It’s kind of like all the DIY projects I do around the house. I could hire someone and it would be a lot less painful, but I like to be able to step back and say, “I did a damn good job”. But homebrewing is even better because I get to drink the results.

    COD-two cases of beer=four months? Seriously? That’s .4 beers a day.
