GOOD (DUMB) ADVICE
Americans should get more exercise. Absolutely. Advising us to walk a half-hour per day instead of driving the car in order to reduce global warming is silly. A half-hour walk is about 1.5 miles. If we’re to walk in lieu of driving that means our destination is only 0.75 miles away. How many Americans have a commute of less than a mile?

Not many. I can’t think of anything that is less then a mile from my house, other then my neighbors house. And walking on my road would be tantamount to suicide. You would get mowed down by a dump truck for sure. |

My commute is about 50 feet from bed to office 🙂 |

My commute is 16 miles. It’d take me 5 hours to walk there. That would be 10 hours round trip. Add in 8.5 hours at the job, and that leaves me about 5.5 hours for everything else. Yeah, sounds reasonable to me. |

Our grocery store is, conveniently, just about a twenty-minute walk from our house. So that’s a forty-minute walk right there, three times a week. The library is a ten-minute walk from our house. That’s another weekly round trip. And most importantly: the best Bloody Marys and tater tots in town are served up at a bar across the street from the library. Exercise, socialization and multitasking all in one convenient package. |
