My guess is that there have been numerous crypto-atheist presidents; there’s an entire strain of conservatism that embraces religion as an agent of social cohesion but does not require personal belief on the part of its elite proponents. The neocons embedded in the Bush administration (certainly not the administration as a whole, of course) would be a recent example. |

Well, sure. No one can know what someone else really believes. Hell, for all we know Billy Graham might be a Satanist. Perhaps I should have titled this post “Admitted Atheists need not apply.” |

I think of myself as a philosopher. If we called me a philosophist, maybe it would sound more like a religious label. But I just Googled that and apparently it means “pretender in philosophy” — so how about Philosophic, like Catholic? |
