{"id":6096,"date":"2006-02-16T21:45:38","date_gmt":"2006-02-17T02:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cobranchi.com\/?p=6096"},"modified":"2006-02-16T21:45:38","modified_gmt":"2006-02-17T02:45:38","slug":"not-extra-at-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cobranchi.com\/?p=6096","title":{"rendered":"NOT EXTRA AT ALL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toacorn.com\/news\/2006\/0216\/Front_Page\/106.html\">This reporter<\/a> really hasn&#8217;t done any research at all.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Kellie Gunner homeschools Michael, her 6-year old son.<\/p>\n<p>That may not be unusual in Conejo Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) where officials estimate as many as 300 students are homeschooled.<\/p>\n<p>And according to the U.S. Census website, as many as 2 million children nationwide are taught at home\u00e2\u20ac\u201c\u00e2\u20ac\u201cand it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s growing by about 20 percent each year.<\/p>\n<p>What\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s extraordinary is that Gunner is a state-credentialed schoolteacher. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, the Census Bureau really didn&#8217;t report that there were 2 million HEKs (in 2001, no less).  It <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/population\/www\/documentation\/twps0053.html\">reported<\/a> that there were estimates that high.  <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to widely-repeated estimates, as many as two million American children are schooled at home, with the number growing at 15 to 20 percent per year (McDowell &#038; Ray 2000, Lines 2000).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And the 15 to 20 percent figure is absolutely dated info.  As Tim noted earlier today, in some parts of the country homeschooling numbers are flat to slightly down over the last half-decade.<\/p>\n<p>And then there&#8217;s that &#8220;extraordinary&#8221; claim.  There are quite a few g-school teachers who end up home educating.
