This LttE is really the anti-Letter of the Day. Pretty negative (and ignorant, to boot).

Public schools still give the best education

Education Code Section 44806 prescribes a teacher’s duty to instruct pupils in morals, manners and citizenship. Why does everyone either think that schools don’t teach these things or think that schools are the only source for these things [“Stay at home, students,” Life etc., May 30]?

The purpose of education is to raise good citizens, not to raise selfish, money-hungry individualists. Sometimes school is the only safe and friendly environment for a child – a place where it’s not crowded with adults yelling or getting in the way, a place where they can get breakfast and lunch, a place where adults make you feel good about yourself.

So until schools no longer fill that need, I argue that they are still preferable to home-schooling. I love my granddaughter, but I know that after three days it is time for a break.

What are these home-schooling parents – saints? Or do they relish the idea of no lines at the amusement parks during the weekdays?

Seriously, parents can supplement the school in the ways that were stated in the home-schooling article without dragging their children out of the system.

Parents do not necessarily have to replace schools entirely. Remember the schools’ Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs. We also cannot forget the special-needs children whose teachers have their own specialized training.

So, because she can only take her grand-daughter for three days at a time, that means the g-schools are preferable and we’re make-believe saints? Talk about anecdotal evidence!

She did get one (and only one) thing right– those amusement parks in September field trips are the best.

*De La Salle is the patron saint of teachers.

We recently attended a homeschool family day at Six Flags Arlington. It was the best trip I’ve ever had there, and I only live a few miles away. ha! The park was open exclusively for home educating families. You can bet I didn’t meet a single rude child or adult.
I’d say that alone should qualify us for sainthood. 😉

A couple of quotes from the article irked me. This one definately did, “The purpose of education is to raise good citizens, not to raise selfish, money-hungry individualists.”
Wow, I need to find that unit study, cause I’m severly slacking on teaching my kids to be money hungry individualists. The other one that got me was this, “Seriously, parents can supplement the school in the ways that were stated in the home-schooling article without dragging their children out of the system.” Has that woman seen the insane amounts of busy work and unfinished class activities that are currently given out in public schools? My neice does a minimum of 2 hours each night. She just finished the 4th grade. I’d like to know when she’s going to have time to suppliment her education. Maybe we can do away with unnecessary things, like sleep or time to just be a kid and play. :p

Oh, I remember my oldest’s ps tryout and the gifted class he was in. *rolls eyes*
Yeah, could have done all that at home. And did. He was so bored.

You must remember that Orange County, California is not part of the normal universe. “Morals, manners & citizenship” don’t mean the same things there that they do in our universe. Neither do “safe,” “friendly,” or “feel good about yourself.”

For the record, my 14 year old works for the local amusement park.

Hell yes, that is all my unschooling mom’s ebil, ebil plan in the end. No lines at the water or amusment parks.

We just came from the DUTCH WONDERLAND- Lancaster PA Homeschool Day yesterday. No lines at rides or the waterpark. Maybe next year we’ll make the one at Hershey Park.

I’d skip the one at HP. Unless they changed it from 04 it was NOT an exclusive homeschooler day, in fact they had busloads upon busloads of Govt school kids. Ugh! I’m going next week to avoid that!

Actually it’s the late September cruises that we enjoy!

And we can’t forget that most of us do it so we don’t have to roll out of bed at 6 to get the kiddies on the 7AM school bus…..

    (OK, maybe that’s just me)
