Hard to pass this one up. A Kindle Fire for $199 with a $50 gift card at Wallyworld. For those of you with college-bound HEKs, Amazon has lots of e-textbooks available. Katelyn is using hers for a couple of classes and loves it. They had an open-book test a couple of weeks ago. Search functions are just too easy. 🙂

Is a desktop plus Fire sufficient for college? I’ve never had a laptop that was actually mobile on a daily basis last more than about 2 years without a major malfunction, so I was thinking of sending Breck off to school in the fall with his desktop plus a Netbook. But since he already has the Fire…

I think so. Katelyn has a laptop and the Fire. But she’s living at home, so she has access to lots of computers. If you send Breck off with the desktop, just be aware that he’ll very likely need a recent version of Office. For reasons known only to them, the profs at both Anthony’s and Katelyn’s schools have provided assignments in 2007 or later. 2003 and prior versions can’t always open the .docx or .dotx formats.

College bookstores offer 2010 (I think) for $100 and change. I don’t know about Mac versions though. And all bets are off with Linux. 🙂

BTW, Katelyn’s one of the early adopters of the Fire for e-books at her school. One of her profs commented on it (while drooling). I expect she won’t be the last student to make the switch.

The Fire allows eay highlighting and note taking. Prices on the textbooks are about 1/3 off. Of course, you can’t sell them back at the end of the semester.

//For reasons known only to them//

It’s the default on Office 2007 and later, and they aren’t bright enough to change it to save as a standard doc file.
