1.984 HEKs PER FAMILY
That’s the estimate provided by our friendly bureaucrats at the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education.

I assume this estimate only covers “HEKs of compulsory attendance age,” not “children in the home.” Daryl, what do you think about their “2 out of 3 are religious” figures? Could this be because NCHE tells its supporters (who lean towards the Christian) to comply, while inclusive homeschoolers are more likely to be unregistered? |

Daryl, what do you think about their “2 out of 3 are religious†figures? Could this be because NCHE tells its supporters (who lean towards the Christian) to comply, while inclusive homeschoolers are more likely to be unregistered? I doubt it. You have to choose one of the two categories when you first register. Chances are a n00b wouldn’t know enough about NCHE or the political climate to choose anything other than what they felt they were. And I doubt there are too many folks who don’t comply. It seems most of the people around here really are convinced that the laws are terrific, best of the best. My best guess is that here in the buckle of the Bible Belt, 2/3 of homeschools really are “religious.” Now what that means is a different issue entirely. It does not necessarily mean that they are home educating for primarily religious reasons. They might be. But I know for a FACT that at least one “religious” homeschool in the state is doing it for reasons other than that. |

I assume this estimate only covers “HEKs of compulsory attendance age,†not “children in the home.†I’m sure. And, if you follow the link, you’ll see that the estimates are based on really old data, before there were very many HEKs of high school age. I’m betting they’re underestimating by a considerable margin. |

I guess I am homeschooling partly for religious reasons even though I am an atheist. I don’t want my child taught creationism at school except in a world religions context. Of course, that is towards the bottom of the why we homeschool list. |
