LOADED FOR BEAR
Since Scott likes to play games, here’s another one in two parts.
1) If the NYT called for the complete withdrawal of US troops from Iraq within 12 months, would that be a radical/left-wing/fringe position?
2) Without resorting to Googling, what percentage of Americans do you think would agree with them?
I’ll provide the answer to Question 2 later today. I think at that point the answer to Question 1 will be self-evident.

I don’t think it would be either radical or fringe. About 85% of Americans went to public schools, and I can’t be responsible for their opinions. |

What a bullshit, weasely, lawyerly non-answer! Come on, Scott. You’ve been accusing the Times and us folks not somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan of being completely out of the mainstream. Surely you could hazard a simple guess. 10%? 20%? Surely there aren’t as many as 25% of Americans who are so radical as to call for an immediate withdrawal? So how ’bout it? |

What does public school have to do with this? That sounds like a cover answer for, “I did google it, but I can’t believe so many Americans remain unconvinced that King George is infallible, so I’m going to . . .err . . .hmmm . . .well . . .” |

Permit me to clarify my earlier comment… I don’t think I’ve ever called the NYT “radical” or “fringe.” I think it consistenly leans to the left. I assume a majority of Americans would like to pull out of Iraq tomorrow. I know I would. But I think it would be unwise to do so–so I don’t think we should, even though I wish we could. I don’t see the public schools emphasizing HISTORY and I sure don’t see them promoting WISDOM, so I would be very surprised if a majority of recent public school graduates could spell “Czechoslovakia” or explain why “peace in our time” isn’t a good idea. (I’m going over to my boycotted blog to offer bonus points to anybody who can give the original reference to the “peace in our time” phrase.) |

Come on, Scott. You called the paper’s actions treasonous. BTW, 55% want out now. And, Chris, I diagree somewhat that polls don’t matter. Yes, we’re a republic. But our representatives in DC tend to like their jobs and want to keep them. Hence, polls carry enormous weight. Finally, Scott, insanity is not a virtue. |

The poll asked if we SHOULD pull out in the next 12 months. I seriously doubt ANY American’s would have voted to stay in Iraq under your scenario. Seriously, what do you think we will accomplish if we stay ’til Jan .’09 (when Bush finally leaves office)? Do you honestly think Iraq will likely look any better? Or the rest of the ME? If not, then what good does staying do (other than saving face for Bush and the neocons)? And who exactly are you accusing of being an appeaser? Chamberlain my ass! |

And I guess that means more than half the country leans left. What were you saying about voting majorities? Welcome to the fringe, Scott. Enjoy your time in the wilderness. I hope you and the GOP put ancient Israel to shame! |
