THE BEST REASON TO HOMESCHOOL?

This practice amazed me when we got back to America: “Hey, guys! I’ve got a great idea! Let’s send our kids out door to door!” I should have remembered my own experience of peddling Scout cookies door to door — and back then we carried cartons with us. At the time, it didn’t seem odd, but what do kids know? After not having experienced children-at-the-door for years, it is unsettling. The new wrinkle is no kids at the door, but cyber-invitations to contribute. |

Did you catch in #1 there were homeschoolers doing a fund raiser? |

School caught fundraisitis along with the whole culture; not being in school doesn’t help much. It’s the middle-class American’s reflex for every possible occasion, our way of expressing ourselves and relating to each other, of being neighborly, a team player at work, politically active, academically supportive, fighting crime and disease and social ills, you name it. Shopping, eating out, watching tv, weddings, funerals and holidays, weekend sports — fundraising is part of it ALL now, never out of sight or mind. Seems it’s the hot new graduate degree even– |

You betcha! When folks ask me about reasons to homeschool, “No fundraisers!” is near the top of my list. |
