Will Smith says he and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith homeschool their children because the most valuable things he learned he didn’t get from school. “The date of the Boston Tea Party does not matter,” Smith told Reader’s Digest. “I know how to learn anything I want to learn. I absolutely know that I could learn how to fly the space shuttle because someone else knows how to fly it, and they put it in a book. Give me the book, and I do not need somebody to stand up in front of the class.”

Celebrity homeschooling exists! But I wish he had chosen another example of something he could easily learn from a book, because I’m fairly certain flight training has a hands on type learning curve.

Maybe he meant fly one in a movie.

FWIW, Will Smith is no dummy. He graduated from Overbrook High in Philly and gave up a scholarship to MIT to persue his career as a rap artist.

    >>Jada tells ESSENCE magazine, “(They are homeschooled) for flexibility, so they can stay with us when we travel, and also because the school system in this country – public and private is designed for the industrial age. We’re in a technological age. We don’t want our kids to memorise. We want them to learn.”

I had read somewhere that they homeschooled, but also that it was more along the lines of hiring private tutors who taught their kids rather than doing it themselves.

Here’s the link to the full Reader’s Digest article, from which the quote was pulled. Interesting reading, especially the part about how everyone should start learning Plato’s “The Republic” in first grade! Also includes a link to the 1 hour 20 minute audio recording of the interview, in case you have nothing better to do!

The blog reaction has been interesting. I’ve seen several blog posts from standard issue statists that are freaked out over this. Apparently our entertainers are not supposed to have ideas that break from the status quo.

Nah…in movies you just jump in any alien spacecraft and fly it into outer space without so much as an oxygen mask 🙂

“I have *got* to get me one o’ these!”

    LOL!

The funniest argument I read against celebrities homeschooling was that their kids should go to school to learn how the be properly socialized. Now I dunno about you, but they all live in or near LA, Hollywood etc… I would think the social atmosphere around there would be even *worse*

I like his attitude about it though, private tutors or not.
