Classy folks over in Moore County. A Habitat for Humanity group tried to buy 83 acres to build a development, and the NIMBYers objected. So the town re-zoned the land to prevent the development. H4H promptly sued in local and state court and won both. Now a group of folks have managed to purchase the land out from under H4H. But these kind folks were only thinking of others:

“We thought the project was an island of doom,” Thompson said about why the group bought the land. “Any residents would have had to walk three quarters of a mile to get to any basic services in Pinebluff.”

Thompson said residents of the development may have been injured trying to cross U.S. 1 to reach town offices, grocery stores or businesses.

The very essence of a humanitarian. I’m sure it had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that H4H clients tend to be poor.

BTW, $6,600/acre is a ridiculously high price around here. Undeveloped land can be had for as little as $1,500 an acre. It seems these folks were quite determined to keep Habitat out of their backyards.

Ugh… apparently, the words ‘short-sighted’ mean nothing to the NIMBYers.

Come on now, Daryl. You know poor (possibly even black!) people don’t like horses. They just wouldn’t fit in.

    Nice folks. 🙁

Oh, yes, classy. My town was devastated by flooding in December, and about 250 families are homeless while their homes are repaired or rebuilt. A city owned site in an area not affected was slated to become a temporary housing area for FEMA trailers, so these people could move out of their garages and camp trailers – but the neighbors of the site complained, saying the area would become an instant ghetto. The city has since began siting the trailers on a very unappealing tract in what would be termed an industrial area. Nice, eh?

But, but all those nice people will be in church tomorrow praying for God to help the poor people.

Nimbys ? I guess we would be Nimps (not in my park) ! Our City council wants the extra money from the property taxes and taxes on wages and is trading 11 acres of land which is a playground ,park , woods teaming with wildlife, and a nice open erea where our children play neighborhood football ,baseball ect .for 4 acres of land that was aquired by Habitat for humanity (the four acres are in a flood zone where they can`t build , i find this very hard to believe that this was not known before they aquired the property ).They are wanting to build 20 to 30 homes on the site of the park . There are at least 10 + homes in the neighborhood that have been foreclosed and standing empty that could easely be remodeled (if needed) for these familys but to take a park away from the our children and neighborhood !!! Do you think this is right ???
